A single-phase motor is an electric motor that operates on single-phase alternating current (AC) power. It is commonly used in residential, commercial, and light industrial applications where three-phase power is not available.
A single-phase AC supply produces a pulsating magnetic field rather than a rotating one. This field alone cannot start the motor. So, auxiliary mechanisms like capacitors or shaded poles are used to create a phase difference and simulate a rotating magnetic field during startup.
